Happy International Women’s Day 2013

It is such a great moment to be a woman…particular a woman with a passion, a dream and/or an idea! Especially today, March 8th – International Women’s Day! The one day the world comes together to celebrate and honour the achievements and advancement of us women!

There is so much information out there to get you started with your ambitions be it full time or part-time; as well as people to assist you in those ambitions.

In the last year we have seen women rise to purpose and eliminate boundaries, such as at the London Olympics last year where every country participating had at least one women representing it during the games – the first time ever!

Many individuals, including women, ask why we need a day to celebrate and honour women. Why, when they have so many rights?! But the real question is do they have equal rights…basic rights even? And are those rights accessible to all women around the world? The answer is no!

Yes, women are doing better and a recent report by the Prudential showed that there are more female breadwinners in a home than ever before. This is partly due to the recession, one parent families and other factors. However, there is still one area a great number of women fall down on and that is their personal finance.

Women generally abdicate the planning of their long term financial future to others, and if we are to believe what the fashion magazines tell us – or even condition women to think, helped by the media – we women think nothing of spending £120 on a designer handbag or a pair of ‘must have’ shoes rather than invest it in our financial education and future.Why is that? We at IWW have our views but we would love to hear yours.

Fiona Price: Financial Heroine to Horse Hero

There are many unsung heroines in the world of finance but Fiona Price is not one of them.

Fiona Price, founder of Fiona Price & Partners and her current business, Horse Hero, is Infinitely Wealthy Women’s sort of person: innovative, inspirational and a pioneer, who over a twenty year period, and with a lot of will and desire, influenced a number of women in and around the Square Mile to get their financial groove on and plan for their future.

At the height of her success Fiona was named as one of the top 100 most influential person in the financial sector, and Fiona Price & Partners – a small but very successful firm offering financial advice to women only, was one of the most mentioned financial businesses in the media; leading to Fiona becoming a media darling/ ‘financial guru’ on popular programmes such as ‘Women’s Hour, BBC Breakfast and News at 10.

I found out about Fiona from my financial advisor, Sandra Corkhill of Sanlam Bank, and once I had done my research on her I knew that I had to interview her.

How She Got Started

Fiona left City University in 1983 with an MBA – a sure fire route to success one would think, but she says she left without being able to read a balance sheet; and with the knowledge that she did not want to be part of a bureaucratic structure she felt she was unemployable. So, on seeing a crass ad in the newspaper ‘be your own boss, be your own company’ she answered it, and in doing so joined an insurance company.

Although numbers still intimidated her she found that being an IFA was more than simply understanding numbers but about helping people. She says “I have never been money led, maybe to my detriment, but passion led.”

What surprised her most however, was the lack of women in the industry at that time. It was dominated by men. She says “coming from a student background of an equal number of men and women I was really shocked that there just weren’t any women around”. Whilst attending financial seminars, she continues “there would be one woman in a room of 100 men.”

This led her to seek out and attend all the women orientated networking events she could find at that time; which were minute compared to today’s plethora of events and organisations for, and led by women. Whilst networking, she found that many other women like her, well educated and high flying career women, where numerically intimidated and thus lacking when it came to their personal finances and in obtaining financial advice. As such she decided to start her own firm.

Fiona was 28 years old when she started her small firm offering financial advice to women. It was a pioneering concept which was laughed at by the men in her office when she shared her intentions. Within 10 years however, it had 3000 clients and became a model for numerous other firms.

Off the back of her initiative and success, finance businesses began to recruit more women advisers, women stepped into their own and created women-only independent financial advisers throughout the country; and the personal finance industry slowly started to change from one being overly male orientated.

30 Years On

Fiona has been out of the finance industry for the last 10 years now, selling her practice for an undisclosed figure after 18 years.

She now follows her passion of horses and created Horse Hero: a leading-edge equestrian video website showing how top riders look after their horses at home and at competition, – as a way to channel that passion into a winning business.

I ask her if she thinks things have changed for women in the realm of personal finance since her days as a financial heroine, what with women still facing a much higher percentage than men in retiring in poverty – as this infographic shows. She said probably not.

From my own experience and working with women, I had to agree. Too many women still have their heads in the sand when it comes to their long term financial plans, how they are going to afford it and still feel intimidated by numbers. At a financial seminar I attended last year hosted by MoneyWeek if there were 500 people in the room there were no more than 20 women. I and the other women I spoke to at the event were shocked by this, particularly those of my age group: 30 – 38. The fact is there is a growing number of women, who want to know where to put their money and do it in way that makes sense to them.

I suggested to Fiona with the advent of the internet and social media could this be an opportune time to really make an impactful difference on the way women view their personal finance and the importance of planning for their future in a less intimidating way than what is presently on offer? She said yes, adding that ‘it does not surprise me much that things have not changed since leaving the industry as I believe, in all honesty, I was ahead of my time’.

3 Tips

To end Fiona gave me three pieces of advice for the infinitely wealthy woman –

Understand the importance of abundance and have a mindset that reflects it
Become adept at money management
Ascertain what it is you want from a financial plan and then plan it!

Valentine’s Day has come and gone for another year and we hope you all had a ‘loving day’, even if it was simply appreciating and loving yourself! Something many us busy, multitasking women do not take the time to do as we are too busy loving and appreciating others; so much so to the detriment of our finances, as the infographic below illustrates.

The heady days of having to marry for social status and monetary security, as displayed in Jane Austen’s 200 year old celebrated novel ‘Pride & Prejudice’, are now long gone the idea of it still remains, with a quietly growing number of women secretly wanting to be financially rescued and provided for by a rich handsome suitor.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with this, as long as you know 1. What you are signing up for and 2. that the likelihood of it happening is very remote. Us, sisters – or most of us – have to do it for ourselves!!

In an era where women have come so far in addressing workplace equality, are being paid more and making headways in various male-dominated industries, it is disheartening to see that women don’t want to or choose not to know how to provide this for themselves due to a lack of confidence and much needed financial education.

Caroline Marsh – A Secret Millionaire

London women worst off for pay in the country….do you agree?

Last week we learnt that the UK had gone into a double dip! Double dip of what, you may ask? Chocolate? Diamonds? Would be nice but nope…a recession! It is the first time since 1975 and there is no real guarantee as to when we will come out of it! Printing our way out of it obviously isn’t working!!

A double dip in layman’s language is when the growth of a country’s GDP (Gross domestic product) slides back in negative shortly out of coming out of it – negative – positive – negative again, not long after. This can and will affect you in different ways – continuation of low interest rates, squeeze on your income due to cuts and stagnated pay increases and all of this as the price of living goes up.

Of course a recession affects everyone but more so women. Although we are earning more and have more opportunities in the job place generally women still earn less than men, more so here in London.

The Evening Standard touched on this last month, reporting that ‘unemployment among women in London continues to rise, up by 7000 to 186,000 in the first quarter of the year….’ There are various reasons for this including that women have more of a sporadic job history than men, sometimes due to raising children at home, etc, etc, and thus are the first to go when job cuts are announced.

In regards to this scenario things are probably going to get worse before they will get better as this chart grows.

In addition to this there are more strikes scheduled following last November’s historical one over pay and pensions.
